CRANIAL SACRAL THERAPY

What is Cranial Sacral Therapy?

Cranial Sacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch, generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, the practitioner releases restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system and associated musculo-skeletal structure.

How Does It Work?

This non-invasive form of bodywork directly influences the head, brain and spinal cord. It is used to find and release areas of restriction, re-educate old holding patterns, and calm over-stressed areas of the body. The primary goal of the Therapy is to restore the natural rhythmic movement found between the bones of the skull and the sacrum. The purpose of this is to aid the circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid throughout the central nervous system, hence bringing balance to all systems of the body.

Reported Health Benefits

By complementing the body's natural healing processes, Cranial Sacral Therapy is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of health problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:

  • Migraine Headaches Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Motor-Coordination Impairments Colic
  • Autism Central Nervous System Disorders
  • Orthopedic Problems Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Scoliosis Infantile Disorders
  • Learning Disabilities Chronic Fatigue
  • Emotional Difficulties Stress and Tension-Related Problems
  • Fibromyalgia and Connective-Tissue Disorders Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
  • Neurovascular or Immune Disorders Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

A Cranial Sacral Session

The client lies (fully clothed) on a cushioned treatment table. The assessment phase of the treatment includes a verbal intake, followed by gentle palpation of the tissues for restrictions. The treatment phase includes myofacial release and very gentle manipulation of the cranial sacral system to bring about deep relaxation.
